Role in the plant

Potassium regulates water movement within the plant, activates enzymes, and strengthens cell walls. It's the nutrient most associated with disease resistance, drought tolerance, and the quality (size, colour, shelf-life) of fruit and grain.

Deficiency symptoms

Signs of potassium deficiency

Marginal leaf scorch

Older leaves develop yellowing and browning along the edges and tips first, often described as 'scorched' margins.

Weak stalks, lodging

Without potassium's structural support, cereal crops are prone to falling over (lodging) before harvest.

Reduced disease resistance

Potassium-deficient plants are markedly more susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections.

Poor fruit quality

Fruits ripen unevenly, develop smaller size, and have shorter shelf life without adequate potassium.
