Deficiency symptoms

Signs of phosphorus deficiency

Dark green or purplish leaves

Phosphorus-deficient plants often develop a distinctive dark green to purple/reddish tint, especially on the underside of leaves and stems.

Stunted root systems

Roots remain short and poorly branched, limiting the plant's ability to access water and other nutrients.

Delayed maturity

Flowering and fruiting are delayed, and the overall crop cycle extends — a costly effect in time-sensitive harvests.

Weak, thin stems

Without phosphorus, structural development suffers, leading to lodging (falling over) in cereal crops.
